Concrete FAQ

Use these quick answers to help you fill in the quote request form and choose the right concrete for your project. Remember: these tips are a general guide.

Concrete is a mix of aggregate (stone and sand), cement and water. Admixtures such as plasticisers (for workability) or air‑entraining agents (for frost resistance) are added when needed.

Standard concrete for small footings or infill jobs is typically:

  • Strength – C25/30
  • Slump – S3 (medium workability)
  • Aggregate size – 16 mm
  • Exposure class
  •  XC0/XC1 (no aggressive exposure)
  • Design life – 50 years

If the pour will be outside and exposed to freeze–thaw, choose a frost‑resistant mix (e.g. XF1) and consider moving up a strength grade.

Concrete is ordered by the cubic metre (m³). Most plants can batch to the nearest 0.1 m³ (≈ 100 litres). Always order a little extra, about 10 – 15 % above the calculated volume – to account for variations and waste. A pump truck retains roughly 0.2 – 0.5 m³ that cannot be discharged.

  • Footing pour: the lowest strip foundation.
  • Foundation wall: the stem wall above the footing.
  • Floor slab: a ground‑bearing or suspended slab.
  • Grouting / infill: highly fluid concrete for filling block cavities or tight gaps.
Mixer truck

Delivers concrete for wheelbarrow or chute placement (6 – 9 m³ capacity).

Mixer‑pump (combo) truck

Carries 2 – 5 m³ and pumps via a boom (20 – 33 m reach) with extra hoses if needed.

Pump truck only

No drum, just a pump; boom lengths 30 – 70 m.

Chute / conveyor truck

Mixer with a 6 – 9 m hydraulic chute.

Compressive strength is the key property. Grades are shown as C**N1/N2** (e.g. C25/30). The higher the numbers, the stronger the concrete.

  • S1: very stiff, not pumpable.
  • S2: stiff, limited pumpability.
  • S3: standard workability; common for footings.
  • S4: fluid; recommended for slabs and grouting.
  • S5: very fluid, self‑levelling mixes.
  • Filler: very fine sand, present in almost every mix.
  • 8 mm: used in grout/infill concretes.
  • 16 mm: typical for slabs and standard footings.
  • 32 mm: large‑stone mixes for mass foundations where placement allows.

A structural engineer specifies the exposure class, indicating the environmental stresses (e.g. frost, chlorides) the concrete must resist.

Most structures are designed for 50, 100 or 200 years. A 50‑year design life doesn’t mean failure at year 51 – durability depends on detailing and maintenance.

  • Frost‑resistant / weather‑resistant
  • Fast‑drying (early coating)
  • Rapid‑hardening (cold weather)
  • Waterproof concrete
  • Self‑compacting concrete (SCC)
  • Hot‑water concrete (winter pours)
  • Fibre‑reinforced (steel or polypropylene)
  • Coloured concrete
